This year was a challenging year for plots on many levels.
Snowpack helped recharge soil moisture reserves and was enough to get the crop germinated. Some areas experienced early season fleabeetle pressure. That coupled with slow crop development The early winter and lack of fall field work created some high residue environments as well as changed the way in which some of my co-operators did their seeding operations. The cool spring slowed plant development and impacted emergence. Fleabeetles were active however none of the plots received an insecticide application. Heavy and variable rains caused issues with drainage and plant stress . The heat in August definitely stunted some yield in some fields depending on the stage of crop development at the time . Much wind throughout the growing season really tested the standability of the hybrids.
There was a large degree of variance within some of the trials, mirroring what was being seen both within fields and also on a regional scale.
Given all the challenges that the 2020 growing season has presented, I'm really impressed with how the plots have performed.
PLOT BACKGROUND
All of the Pioneer hybrids were treated with Helix Vibrance + Lumiderm.
The Roundup Ready hybrids had a targeted seeding rate of 4.5 - 5 lb/ac.
The LibertyLink hybrids had a targeted seeding rate of 5 - 5.5 lb/ac due to larger seed TKW.
All trials were seeded, harvested and managed using the co-operator's equipment and crop input regimens.
All the trials were on wheat stubble.
The average harvest sample size per hybrid was just under 3 acres.
All weights measured using my weigh truck with Norac scaling system (see upper right for picture).
All moistures taken on the same 919 moisture tester and all green seed counts done by myself.
THE TAKEAWAYS
The Roundup Ready platform from Pioneer continues to build on the consistency of 45H33 with the introduction of 45H42 which placed in the top 2 in my trials in addition to showing this same trend in other trials in Northern Saskatchewan.
Although only in it's second year, Pioneer's LibertyLink lineup continue to impress with yield, consistency, trait packages and harvestability.
Plot results are recorded in the order in which they were seeded in the field, not from highest to lowest.
Thank you to my co-operators. None of this would be possible without you.
